Tulips, Open Fields, and a Quiet Ride North

April 13, 2025 Liza

Each spring, rows of tulips stretch across the Skagit Valley, just over an hour north of Seattle. The festival, held throughout April, draws visitors who come not for speed or noise, but for color, air, and space. There’s no rush built into the day — just time to walk between fields, step carefully along dirt paths, and see how the light moves over flowers that never quite bloom the same way twice.

The experience isn’t about checking things off a list. It’s more about comfort: flat ground, clear signage, places to sit, and views that don’t demand effort to be appreciated. The open fields are framed by mountains in the distance, and depending on the week, the reds and purples give way to oranges or clean bands of white and yellow. The camera gets used, but not too much — most visitors end up putting it away after a while.

Most visitors make a plan around one or two locations—Roozengaarde is the most popular stop, with well-kept gardens and wide walking paths, while Tulip Town adds covered displays and a local art market. Some groups also include smaller farms like Garden Rosalyn, which often feel quieter and more open. For a group of four to six, a round trip makes sense. With general parking on-site and plenty of time to explore at a relaxed pace, keeping the van for both legs of the trip avoids the need to coordinate pickup later. The drive is just long enough that no one misses being behind the wheel.
