Ai Weiwei at Seattle Art Museum: A Must-See Retrospective

March 16, 2025 Liza

For those who follow contemporary art, Ai Weiwei’s name needs no introduction. His work blends artistic vision with activism, challenging ideas of freedom, censorship, and history. Starting March 12, the Seattle Art Museum presents a rare opportunity to see his work on a large scale.

The exhibition brings together over 130 pieces, covering four decades of Ai’s career. Some of the most well-known works are here—his Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn, where a centuries-old artifact is shattered, and Study of Perspective, a series of photographs that make a statement about authority. His famous Sunflower Seeds installation, made of thousands of hand-painted porcelain seeds, is also included.

But the exhibition goes beyond the museum itself. The Seattle Asian Art Museum presents Water Lilies, a large-scale LEGO recreation of Monet’s masterpiece. Meanwhile, the Olympic Sculpture Park hosts Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, a striking outdoor display of bronze sculptures.

For those planning a visit, parking in downtown Seattle can be difficult, especially on weekends. Booking a ride with Astra Limousine makes the trip easy—no need to worry about finding a spot or dealing with traffic. A comfortable, private ride ensures that visitors can focus on the exhibition, arriving relaxed and ready to experience Ai Weiwei’s powerful work.
